Weight loss info:

Even if you are not interested in entering a contest, you and your pet can be winners if you follow a few simple steps for helping your dog or cat take off those excess pounds and live a longer, healthier life.

Here are a few simple tips:

  • Check with your vet before starting any weight loss program for your pet.
  • Don’t worry about weight loss so much as your pet’s body shape.  Become familiar with what a normal weight dog or cat looks like.  You can find the charts on this site.
  • For dogs, a simple weight loss plan is to replace half their food with cooked green beans and canned pumpkin.
  • Gradually eliminate the bottomless food bowl, and make sure you do it slowly over time.  Food should never be cut back suddenly because that can cause serious health conditions.
  • A measured amount of food should be fed to dogs and cats once or twice daily.  Ask your veterinarian for help with the correct amount and be sure you taper off slowly so your pet can adjust.
  • Don’t eliminate treats because this is such an important bonding time for you and your pet.  Reduce the portions, though, and give them smaller pieces.  You can substitute healthy treats like soft cheese, fruit and plain popcorn.  Just watch the portions!
  • Be sure your pet gets regular exercise.  Dogs should be walked at least two times a day for 10 to 15 minutes.  Thrill your pooch by throwing a ball or playing with him.  Get your cat to chase a toy or a piece of string.  Just get them moving, and you might enjoy it as well!
